New York Giants purchase three stars from the Federal League

On January 17, 1916, the New York Giants purchase three stars from the Federal League: pitcher Fred Anderson, outfielder Benny Kauff, and catcher Bill Rariden, from the Brooklyn Tip Tops for $35,000. Kauff, the 26-year-old center fielder was the Federal League’s best player. His first three seasons with New York are solid, but the trash-talking fly chaser will never live up to his reputation of being the ‘Ty Cobb of the Feds’.

New York Mets select heralded outfielder Darryl Strawberry

June 3, 1980

The Mets complete the deal that brings Senator skipper Gil Hodges (321-444, .420), who still had a year left on his contract with Washington, to New York to become the team’s fourth manager in the brief history of the five year-old franchise. The Amazins’ obtain the beloved former Dodger and original Met by sending 21 year-old right-hander Bill Denehy and $100,000 in reparations to nation’s capital.

November 27, 1967

The Angels acquire slugger Dave Kingman from San Diego for cash consideration. Nine days later, the Yankees will buy Kingman, making him the first player to wear four uniforms in four divisions in the same year. Kingman, who started the season with the Mets, will hit 26 home runs to set the mark for the most by a player with more than two teams.
