On August 19, 1957, the board of directors of the New York Giants votes nine to one to move the franchise to San Francisco. the only dissenting vote cast by M. Donald Grant, who will become the chairman of the Mets, an expansion team located in New York to fill the National League void created by the departure of the Giants and Dodgers to California. The Giants will join the rival Brooklyn Dodgers on the West Coast, beginning with the 1958 season. The Giants will initially play games at Seals Stadium before moving into Candlestick Park.

Giants’ president Horace Stoneham, ignoring baseball’s edict of banning announcements about the relocation of franchises until after the World Series, informs the press the club has signed a lease to play its home games in San Francisco next season. The club’s Board of Directors voted 8-1 approving the shift to the West Coast, with the only dissenting vote cast by M. Donald Grant, who will become the chairman of the Mets, an expansion team located in New York to fill the National League void created by the departure of the Giants and Dodgers to California.

2004 – Roger Clemens and Brad Lidge combine to blank the Brewers, 1-0, on a two-hitter while striking out 13. Clemens claims the 328th win of his career, becoming the tenth best of all time. He provides offense, too, driving in the game’s only run and later blasting a double – one of just four Houston hits. Craig Biggio also doubles to move past Eddie Murray into 18th all-time in that category. The win keeps Houston a half-game behind Chicago and tied with San Francisco in the wild card race.

2017 – In a trade that beat the waiver deadline by seconds, the Astros acquired former Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander from Detroit for three minor league prospects. The Tigers also agreed to pay $8 million per season for the remaining years on Verlander’s contract. Behind Verlander’s 5-0 record and 1.06 ERA over the final month, Houston closed the year on a 20-8 run to post a 101-61 mark, one shy of the 102 wins of the 1998 squad and winning the American League West for the first time.

The disappointing Pirates continue to flounder, splitting a pair with the last-place Astros, dropping the opener thanks in large part to outsize slugging by the “Toy Cannon”, Jimmy Wynn. Four of Houston’s eight runs ride home on Wynn’s two homers, the last of which is a three-run, tape-measure coup-de-grñce which puts Houston up by 8 before Pittsburgh even shows a pulse. The culminating “Cannon Shot” passes over the batting cage to the left of the 457-foot mark on the way out, putting it in the company of historic shots by Rogers Hornsby, Josh Gibson, Ralph Kiner, Dick Stuart and Roberto Clemente. As it turns out, the Pirates do eventually compete and what looked like icing will prove to be Houston’s margin of victory as they hold on and outlast Pittsburgh, 8 – 5.
