On September 26, 1981 — Nolan Ryan becomes the first pitcher to throw five no-hitters when the Houston Astros defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Astrodome, 5-0. Ryan had shared the record of four with Dodger great Sandy Koufax, but had not pitched a no-hitter since June 1, 1975. The 34-year-old Ryan strikes out 11 and retires the last 19 batters in a row while lowering his league-leading ERA to 1.74. Nolan’s gem matters even more since the Astros are nursing a slim lead over Cincinnati in the N.L. West split-season race.
