Oakland Athletics sweep the Red Sox in ALCS 

On October 9, 1988 – The Oakland Athletics complete a 4-game sweep and beat the Boston Red Sox, 4-1, in Game 4 of the ALCS, winning the American League pennant and moving on to the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Pitcher Dave Stewart gets the win while Bruce Hurst collects his 2nd loss of the series. Jose Canseco ties a playoff record with his third home run of the Series and Dennis Eckersley sets a major league playoff mark with his fourth  save and is named the MVP.
