On November 18, 1924 — Oakland Oaks owner Cal Ewing announces that he has sold the team to Washington Senators star Walter Johnson, represented by George Weiss, who deposited a check for $5,000 towards the purchase. Last month, Ewing announced that the sale price was an enthusiastic $450,000 (the St. Louis Cardinals’s recent sale was for $275,000). Nothing will come of all the talk, and Johnson will return to the Washington team.

Rickwood Field, the first concrete-and-steel ballpark in the minor leagues, opens in Birmingham with the hometown Barons scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth in their exciting 3-2 walk-off victory over Montgomery. The Alabamian landmark, which will become the oldest surviving professional baseball park in the country, is well attended by the citizens of the booming iron-and-steel town, often drawing standing-room-only crowds in excess of 10,000 fans in the first decade of its existence.

August 18, 1910

With war-time travel restrictions still in effect, the Dodgers open spring training at Bear Mountain, New York with 15 players in camp. Seven teams – the Browns, Tigers, Reds, Indians, Cubs, Pirates and White Sox – are training in Indiana, the most of any state. The Red Sox are at Tufts College in Massachusetts, while the Braves are prepping at the Choate School in Connecticut.
