On the main concourse in left field at U.S. Cellular Field, the White Sox unveiled a life-sized bronze statue of Carlton Fisk. The Hall of Fame catcher, who played for the ChiSox from 1981 to the end of his career in 1993, joins team founder Charles A. Comiskey and Cuban legend Minnie Minoso, who have also been honored with statues in the Chicago ballpark.

1911 – In Chicago, the Giants paste the Cubs, 16 – 5, and the Pirates now lead in the National League race for the first time. But it doesn’t last, as the Cubs will replace them tomorrow with a 7 – 5 win over the visiting Cardinals. The lead will change 26 times, as the top four teams bounce in and out until the Giants emerge on August 24th and build a 7 1/2 game lead over the Cubs.

August 9, 1911

The Blue Jays score in every inning but the 2nd in registering a 14 – 7 win over the Twins in Toronto. Veteran Dave Stieb wins his first game since 1993. Stieb, who began the year as a guest instructor in spring training, gives up four earned runs in five innings.
