On April 22, 1898 — On the same day, Ted Breitenstein of the Cincinnati Reds and Jay Hughes of the Baltimore Orioles each pitch no-hit ball games. Hughes Gem over the Boston Beaneaters, final score was 8 – 0.

Breitenstein’s no-hitter for the Reds against the Pirates at League Park in Cincinnati. He struck out two and walked one in an 11-0 win. Breitenstein’s catcher in the no-hitter was Heinie Peitz. The pair became known as the “Pretzel Battery” because of their German heritage. Breitenstein previously pitched a no-hitter in his first major league start with St. Louis in the American Association in 1891. He had a 20-14 record for the Reds in 1898.
