One out away from clinching a playoff berth, Padres closer Trevor Hoffman gives up a game-tying pinch-hit triple to Tony Gwynn Jr, the son of a former teammate who he used to baby sit. The Padres will lose the game as well as tomorrow’s season finale, resulting in a one-game playoff loss to Colorado that keeps the team out of the postseason.

On September 29, 2007 — One out away from clinching a playoff berth, the Padres are bit by irony when Tony Gwynn Jr, the son of San Diego’s hometown Hall of Famer, triples in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth for Milwaukee off closer Trevor Hoffman.

Hoffman a teammate of Tony Gwynn used he to babysit, Gywnn, Jr. ultimately, his hit denies the Padres the chance to clinch a playoff spot on the next-to-the-last day of the season. The Brewers win the game in 10 innings. The Padres will also lose tomorrow’s season finale, resulting in a one-game playoff loss to Colorado that keeps the team out of the postseason.
