On December 13, 2000 — Outbidding the Indians, the Red Sox sign free-agent Manny Ramirez to a reported eight-year, $160 million contract. The very lucrative deal pales in comparison to Alex Rodriguez’s $252 million ten-year agreement with the Rangers, which is also announced today.

Manny Ramirez will lead the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 winning the MVP and 2007. In 9 postseason series, he will hit 11 home runs and drive in 36 runs.  During his 7+ seasons he ranks 3rd all time in Slugging (588) and OPS (999), 5th in OBP (411) and 6th (274)  and 7th (868) respectively in Homeruns and RBIs. He also earned a reputation as Manny being Manny with some unprofessional behavior.
