A speedy outfielder from Philadelphia, Pat Kelly swiped 20 or more bases five times for three different teams. A devout Christian, Kelly often grimaced at the colorful language that dripped from Earl Weaver’s lips in Baltimore. On one occasion, Weaver cursed a string of expletives after Kelly popped up runners in scoring position. Kelly softly reminded his manager that he shouldn’t use that language and that he needed to “walk with the lord.” Weaver snorted, “Pat, you need to walk with the bases loaded!” In 15 seasons, Kelly hit .264 with 250 stolen bases and had his biggest hit in Game Four of the 1979 AL Playoffs, when he homered to send the O’s to the World Series.

Transactions
September 11, 1962: Signed by the Minnesota Twins as an amateur free agent.

October 15, 1968: Drafted by the Kansas City Royals from the Minnesota Twins as the 34th pick in the 1968 expansion draft.

October 13, 1970: Traded by the Kansas City Royals with Don O’Riley to the Chicago White Sox for Gail Hopkins and John Matias.

November 18, 1976: Traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Baltimore Orioles for Dave Duncan.

October 23, 1980: Granted Free Agency.

December 29, 1980: Signed as a Free Agent with the Cleveland Indians.

April 2, 1982: Released by the Cleveland Indians.

Nearly every team that got rid of Pat Kelly, soon regretted it. When he was drafted from the Twins by the Royals in the expansion draft, he played well for the Royals for two years, stealing 74 bases for the new club. The Royals dealt him away, for some silly reason, and he had six good years in Chicago. The O’s got him in a steal, straight-up for Dave Duncan, who never played another game. He was essentially a pitching coach by that time. Kelly proved to be one of Earl Weaver’s valuable little cogs for four seasons. Only the Indians got shated when they got Pat Kelly. He was over-the-hill at 36 when he was let go by the Tribe after an injury-riddled 1981 season.
