American League president Will Harridge upholds Detroit’s protest of its August 1st game against New York and orders it replayed on September 8th. Detroit had protested because Tony Lazzeri’s and Ben Chapman’s batting order was orally reversed after the lineup cards were handed in before the game.

It’s a hard slog, as the O’s prevail, 5 – 4, over San Diego and Millwood needs the help of three relievers, including Alfredo Simon, who picks up the save in his return from the disabled list.

In his last big league game, Ed Kranepool pinch hits in the top of the seventh inning and doubles off Bob Forsch when the Mets beat the Cardinals in the season finale at Busch Stadium, 4-2. The James Monroe High School graduate, who made his debut with the team in 1962 at the age of 17, had been the last original Met left in the majors.
