On October 22, 1933 â Phil Ball, the millionaire owner of the Browns, dies of septicemia. Manager Rogers Hornsby will take over the reins of the franchise, staying on as skipper until he is fired in 1937 by Donald Barnes, who purchased the team from the Ball estate last year.
