Phillies Fans give it to Bonds

On May 7, 2006, When Barry Bonds takes his position in left field, the Phillies fans in the stands behind him unfurl a section-long banner which leaves no doubt about their sentiments concerning the Giants outfielder’s pursuit of the Babe. The message displayed briefly during the first inning informs the unpopular superstar “Ruth did it on hot dogs & Beer – Aaron did it with class”.

Louisville’s Chicken Wolf hits a game-winning inside-the-park home run, thanks to a stray dog impeding Abner Powell from fielding the ball. The canine, who had been sleeping by the fence, refuses to let go of the pant leg of the Reds center fielder, who watches in dismay as the Colonel batter races around the bases in the team’s 5-4 loss at Eclipse Park.

Pitcher Kip Gross loses two games, in two different leagues, 1,100 miles apart. The Cincinnati Reds hurler takes the loss in the Reds’ 10 – 6 defeat by the Pittsburgh Pirates, and also becomes the loser of a game played by the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. It is the completion of a game in Denver which had been suspended by rain back on May 15.

July 14, 1991

The Mariners stun the Twins with a 10-run seventh inning, coming back from a 6-0 deficit in an eventual 11-6 victory at Safeco Field. With six runs driven in, Raul Ibanez, who hits a grand slam and a two-run single in the frame, establishes a club record for RBIs in one inning, one more than Ken Griffey Jr.’s mark set in 1999.
