On September 19, 1949 â Pirates slugger Ralph Kiner hits his 50th home run of the year, taking Kirby Higbe deep in a 6-4 loss to the Giants at Forbes Field. The 26 year-old All-Star outfielder, having hit 54 round-trippers in his sophomore season of 1947, becomes the first National League player to accomplish the feat in two different seasons.
