On January 30 1917 — Pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander announces he is ready to retire from professional baseball and join a semipro team if his salary demands are not met. Alexander wants a three-year contract at $15,000 per year.

Alexander will settle for $12,500 and win the triple crown of pitching, winning 30 games, with a 1.83 ERA and 200 strikeouts.

6/22/1928: In the top of the seventh inning at Wrigley Field, the Cardinals scored two runs on a homer by Jim Bottomley to take a 6-1 lead over the Cubs on Ladies Day. However, rain stopped the game during the top half of that frame and the score reverted back to the last complete inning, so Bottomley lost his sixteenth home run of the season.
