On July 16, 1970, In precisely the same spot as Exposition Park, the home of the Pirates from 1891 to 1909, the Pittsburgh Pirates play their first game in Three Rivers Stadium, the successor to Forbes Field. Dock Ellis throws the first pitch in the new stadium and future Hall of Famer Willie Stargell rips a home run for the Bucs, who lose the game to the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2. Another Hall of Famer, Tony Perez, hits the first home run in the stadium’s history.
Also making a debut is the Pirates new uniforms of stretchable cotton and nylon, the parade them around the park.
