On September 5, 1954 â Playing in the Class C Longhorn League, Joe Bauman of the Roswell Rockets hits three home runs to give him 72 for the season. Although the 32 year-old slugging minor league first baseman never made it to the majors, his home run total stood as a record in professional baseball until it was broken with 73 dingers by Giants outfielder Barry Bonds in 2001.
