On October 11, 1973 â Ralph Houk, less than two weeks after leaving the Yankees for the second time in his career, signs a three-year deal to be the manager of the Tigers, a team in a rebuilding mode. The Major, replacing a fiery Bill Martin, fired by the team at the end of August, will compile a 363-443 (.450) record during his five seasons in the Motor City.
