September 19, 1929-Braves outfielder Ray Shearer is born in Jacobus, Pennsylvania. The Braves acquired him on July 4, 1956 from Brooklyn in exchange for Jim Frey.
He appeared in two games for the Braves going 1 for 2. His hit was a big one. On September 29,1957, the last game of the regular season, the Braves trailed Cincinnati 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth.Joe Adcock led off the inning with a single, and Mel Roach came in to pinch run. After pinch-hitter Del Crandall flied out to centerfield, Shearer, pinch-hitting for Carl Sawatski came through with a single advancing Roach to third. Andy Pafko struck out, but back-to-back singles by Red Schoendienst and Felix Mantilla gave the Braves the win. Shearer scored the winning run.
This was Shearer’s only stint in the majors.
