On June 11, 1988, Rick Rhoden of the New York Yankees becomes the first pitcher to start a game as a designated hitter since the adoption of the rule in 1973. Rhoden provides a sacrifice fly in the Yankees’ 8-6 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
