The 1968 home opener scheduled for April 8 was postponed in deference to the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. who was assassinated on April 4. It was the first time an opener had been cancelled due to reasons other than weather. The game was postponed a second day when rioters and looters caused between $10 and $20 million of damage to the city and forced city officials to impose a 4 p.m. curfew; The final game played at RFK Stadium by the Washington Senators on September 30, 1971 prior to their move to Texas the following year was forfeited to the Yankees, 9-0, when fans stormed the field with two outs in the top of the ninth
