Roger Maris of the New York Yankees ties Babe Ruth for most home runs in one season

On September 26, 1961 — At Yankee Stadium, with fewer than 20,000 fans in attendance, during a 3-2 Yankee win over the Baltimore Orioles, in the bottom of the 3rd inning Roger Maris ties Babe Ruth’s 34 year-old single-season record with his 60th home run of the year, a high drive down the right-field line off on a curveball thrown by Orioles right-hander Jack Fisher.

The Yankee outfielder’s accomplishment comes in the 159th game of the newly expanded season, which at the time keeps Ruth the single-season home run leader according to an edict made by baseball commissioner Ford Frick, who ruled for the mark to be shared or broken the historic homerin had to come in the first 154 games of the season. Fisher takes the loss dropping to (10-13) and Rollie Sheldon picks up the win (10-5). Brooks Robinson collects 2 hits and drives in both of Baltimore’s runs.
