Ron Santo rips into CF Don Young for two misplays in the outfield

On July 8, 1969 — At Shea Stadium with three runs in the 9th inning, the Mets beat the Cubs, 4 – 3, cutting Chicago’s lead in the National League East to four games. Ron Santo rips into CF Don Young for two misplays in the outfield. Santo will apologize tomorrow for criticizing Young, who left early and doesn’t take the team bus. Santo will get booed in his first game back at Wrigley Field.

Santo’s comments about Young were not particularly kind ones and neither were his assessments of the Mets’ lineup.

“I know the Dodgers won pennants with just pitching but this Mets’ lineup is ridiculous,” Santo said. Then having second thoughts about his statement, he said: “Maybe I’d better not say anything else because my mouth will get me in trouble.”

“Our man pitched his heart out and one man can’t catch a fly ball. It’s a disgrace,” snapped a brooding Leo Du- rocher. “He [Young breaks the wrong way for one ball then went back and gave up on it.”

Fergie Jenkin’s who suffered the defeat said, “If they don’t catch the ball there is not much I can do. All I can do is throw”
