Rookie outfielder Pete Reiser starts his second spring training game for the Brooklyn Dodgers

On March 22, 1939 — Brooklyn Dodger, 20 year old rookie outfielder Pete Reiser starts his second spring training game. After going 0 for 3 yesterday against the Yankees, Reiser belts a home run in his first at bat against the Cardinals, and follows with a walk and two singles. He will have 10 straight hits before striking out three times against Yankees pitcher Oral Hildebrand six days later. When Jack Haley relieves Hildebrand, Reiser hits a home run off him. Reiser will go north with Brooklyn and play in an April 15th exhibition against the Yankees in Ebbets Field before being sent to the Eastern League Triple-A Elmira Pioneers he will hit .301 in 38 games in an injury-plagued season.

For the second straight game, the Virgin Islands fall a run shy of the winning their first game since the 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games. After falling 1 – 0 to Panama in their first game of the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games, they lead Guatemala, 5 – 2, going into the bottom of the 9th only to lose, 7 – 6, in 11 innings.

July 22, 2010

A quirk in the major league rules results in the first game of a doubleheader at Cleveland Stadium being suspended due to darkness, but allows the Tigers to beat the Indians in the nightcap, 3-2. The scoreless opener was stopped in the 14th inning because the ML edict states games started in daylight could not be completed under artificial lights, but the rule did not apply to the second game of the twin bill because it would be started after the sun went down.
