Don Kessinger (46-60) is fired mid-season as the player-manager of the White Sox and will be replaced by rookie skipper Tony La Russa, who had been managing the club’s Triple-A Iowa Oaks in the American Association. During his eight-year tenure with Chicago, La Russa will compile a 522-510 record, with his team winning the AL West title in 1983.

With Terry Moore sidelined after fracturing his foot yesterday, the Cards top Brooklyn, 4 – 2, behind Jesse Haines. Paul Dean saves the game in relief. In the second game of the doubleheader in St. Louis, a tired Dizzy Dean again fails in relief, giving up three runs as Brooklyn wins, 8 – 7. The Cards are now trailing the Cubs by 2 1/2 games.

The Yankees clip the Orioles, 13 – 9, scoring 8 runs in the 2nd inning to come back from a 7-run deficit. Sidney Ponson helps with four straight walks in the inning. Yankee Scott Brosius ties the major-league record for 3B by starting four double plays in the game.
