Biography

Raymond “Rube” Bressler (1894-1966) was one of the relatively few players who made a successful transition from major league pitcher to productive position player. Since 1900 there have been only 6 who have pitched more than 50 games and played more than 50 games at other positions. The other 5 are Ruth, Smoky Joe Wood, Johnny Cooney, Reb Russell, and Rick Ankiel. Bressler was a left-handed pitcher for the A’s (1914-’16) and the Reds (1917-’20) compiling a record of 26-32, 3.40 ERA. A shoulder injury, for which there was no effective treatment at the time, ended his pitching career, and he transitioned to the outfield where he played for the following 11 years, in Cincinnati and Brooklyn, batting .301 and driving in 586 runs.
