Rube Waddell debuts in historic fashion for A’s

 

On july 1, 1902 At Columbia Ball Park, Playing his first game for Connie Mack’s Philadelphia A’s, Rube Waddell faces only 27 batters, blanking the Baltimore Orioles, 2 – 0. The 25-year old southpaw strikes out the side three times by whiffing Billy Gilbert, Harry Howell and Jack Cronin in the 3rd (on just nine pitches) 6th, and 9th innings. Catcher Ossee Schrecongost throws out the two baserunners.
