Nolan Ryan homers in his debut with the Houston Astros

On April 12, 1980 — After eight years with the California Angels, Nolan Ryan makes his debut with the Houston Astros. Ryan, who did not come to bat the previous seven seasons, hits a 3-run homer in the 4th inning off Don Sutton. The Astros lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 17 innings, 6 – 5.

Ryan faced off against another future Hall of Famer Don Sutton, neither lasted past the 6th, Ryan went 6 full giving up 4 eraned runs, and striking out 3 batters. Dusty Baker and Reggie Smith took Ryan deep.

Sutton pitched 5 full innings giving 4 earned runs and 5 total runs. The big blow was Ryan’s 3 run shot.

The Dodgers and Astros will battle all season for the western division.
