San Francisco Giants fire manager Clyde King after a heartbreaking 17-16

On May 23, 1970, the San Francisco Giants fire manager Clyde King after a heartbreaking 17-16 loss in 15 innings to the San Diego Padres. Nate Colbert leads the Padres with five hits and four runs batted in. A 15th-inning home run by Steve Huntzā€š one of 9 homers in the gameā€š ends the 5:29 affair.

The Giants replace King with Charlie Fox, their Phoenix PCL affiliate skipper from 1965 to 1968. San Francisco, with a 19-23 record at the time of the Goldsboro, NC nativeā€™s dismissal, recovers to go 14 games over .500, finishing third under their new field boss. Fox will lead the Giants to the National League West title the following season.
