Juan Marichal 1963

San Francisco’s Juan Marichal spins a 1-0 no-hitter against the Colts at Candlestick Park

On June 15, 1963 — In front of 18,869 fans at Candlestick Park San Francisco’s Juan Marichal the 25 year-old Dominican native spins a 1-0 no-hitter against the Houston Colts. For 7-1/2 innings, a scratch single by Willie Mays off unlucky Colt starter Dick Drott is the only hit but Jim Davenport legs out a double in the eighth then Chuck Hiller doubles him home. Marichal strikes out Pete Runnels and Brock Davis to finish the gem.

While the SFGiants franchise has achieved plenty of no-hit success, both in New York and San Francisco, Marichal’s no-hitter snapped a 34-year no hitter drought. Carl Hubbell’s 1929 no-hitter would be the last in New York Giants history and it took five years in San Francisco for Marichal’s milestone to occur.
