Spahn beats Robin Roberts and the Phillies 3-2 to keep pace with Brooklyn

September 26, 1959- At Milwaukee County Stadium, in a game that was played in 1:59, Warren Spahn pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Braves beat Robin Roberts and the Phillies 3-2. Both Philadelphia runs were scored on homers by Gene Freese and Wally Post. Eddie Matthews, Hank Aaron and Lee May paced the offense with 2 hits each and Matthews scores the go ahead run in the bottom of the 8th.

With Spahn’s 21st win. He passes Eppa Rixey as the winningest lefty in National League history.

The Braves remained tied with the Dodgers for the NL lead.

1922 – At Sportsman’s Park, Rogers Hornsby belts a two-out 9th inning home run with two men on the give the Cards a 7 – 6 win over Boston. It is the Rajah’s 25th home run of the year, breaking Gavvy Cravath’s National League home run mark (post-1900). In two weeks, Hornsby will break the record of 27 homers set in 1884 by Chicago’s Ned Williamson.
