He will later duplicate this batting feat twice, hitting a pair of homers on August 6‚ 1891‚ and on June 12‚ 1896‚ making him the first pitcher to achieve this. The only two pitchers to match this achievement are Wes Ferrell (who had 5 such games) and Don Newcombe.

Cardinals second baseman Rogers Hornsby, speaking with Billy Evans in today’s issue of the Pittsburgh Press, all but predicts that he will set a new National League single-season home run record this season: “When the season started, I didn’t give the matter of home runs a thought, even though I made 21 last year. However, they started to come my way rather easily and now I have the home run fever. With the season less than half over, I have 18 to my credit. Back in 1884, so the records say, Ed Williamson, playing with Chicago, made 27 home runs. That record has stood the test of all the great hitters of the National League for 38 years. Chipper Jones drives in three runs in Atlanta’s 7 – 0 win over San Diego, moving past Mickey Mantle on the all-time RBI list with 1,512. Among switch-hitters, only Eddie Murray has more RBI than Jones with 1,917. Tommy Hanson is the winner over Mat Latos, who falls to 0-4.

Not surprisingly, the teams who are leading in the standings dominate these rosters, with the Nationals and Astrosproviding three starters each for their respective teams. Bryce Harper of the Nats is the top vote-getter.
