Stan Musial makes an unusual request – asking for a pay cut

stan musialOn January 21, 1960, future Hall of Famer Stan Musial makes an unusual request – asking for a pay cut. Musial tells St. Louis Cardinals management that he is overpaid and should have his salary reduced after a subpar 1959 season.

The Cardinals cut his salary from $100,000 to $80,000, believing that he was overpaid in 1957 and 1958, and the reduced salary should be a reflection of his poor production for the team last season. The Redbird’s 39 year-old All-Star first baseman batted .255 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs in the 115 games he played in last season.
