Stan Musial’s Injury Ends 894-Game Streak

On August 22, 1957 — Stan Musial tears a muscle and chips a bone swinging at a pitch in the fourth inning against the Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium. The injury will end ‘Stan the Man’s’ consecutive game streak at 894, but by pinch-running in a game which was suspended on July 21st and completed on August 27th, he establishes a new NL mark, officially playing in 895 consecutive contests.

Pittsburgh’s Earl Francis (9-8) gives up two hits in 10 innings in beating the Reds, 1 – 0. Jim Maloney matches him for nine innings. Bob Friend pitches the 11th to earn his first save of the year after Bill Mazeroski and Willie Stargell double home the winning run. Bucs vet Bill Virdon steals his 5th base to go along with his 13 caught stealings, tying him for National League high with Maury Wills.

September 26, 1962

Meanwhile, in a struggle between the top two teams in the NL West, the Padres shut out the Giants, 1 – 0, to move one game ahead of their chief rivals. Tim Stauffer pitches 6 scoreless innings and the game ends when Pads closer Heath Bell strikes out Buster Posey and Yorvit Torrealba guns down pinch runner Darren Ford at second base on a stolen base attempt. Torrealba had earlier driven in the game’s only run with a solo home run.

September 11, 2010

With more than two weeks left in the season, the Orioles clinch the first-ever American League East title when they beat Cleveland at Memorial Stadium, 7-3. The heavily-favored Birds will sweep Minnesota, the AL West Champs, to capture a pennant, but will lose the World Series in five games to the Amazin’ Mets.
