October 5, 1930 – At Sportsman’s Park III, Jesse Haines pitches a brilliant 4-hitter to beat Lefty Grove and the A’s 3-1‚ evening up the Series 2 games each.
Haines was a surprise starter, most expected Burleigh Grimes to start the game.

But Gabby Street gave the ball to 37-year-old Jesse Haines, who had yet to pitch in the Series. “If I am going to win this Series, Haines has got to win a game for me,” Street said, “and I might as well find out right now if he can come through.”

Al Simmons drew first blood with an RBI single in the top of the first.  Jesse Haines helps himself knocks in Charlie Gelbert with a RBI single if the third. Haines hit well in 1930, 246, and four years earlier Haines homered in the 1926 World Series.  The Cardinals will strike for two runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 4th, the big break was a Jimmy Dykes throwing error after Chick Hafey doubled to break the tie. Dykes could have easily tagged Hafey for the final out of the inning but instead went to first and throw widely to first and Jimmie Foxx could not make a play on the ball.  Haines will retire 15 of the next 17 batters, the two who reached base did so on walks that turned out to be harmless.
