The Mutual club of New York leaves on the steamer General Barnes for Savannah‚ Georgia where they will start their southern tour with a game on April 10th.
1871 – Joseph Jerome (Joe) McGinnity is born in Cornwall Township, Henry County, Illinois. A right-handed pitcher, McGinnity will gain notoriety by winning both ends of doubleheaders, and in 1903, he will pull off the feat three times in a single month, winning all six games. In a ten-season major league career, he will amass 246 wins, including 31 in 1903, 35 in 1904, and seven seasons with 20-plus wins. McGinnity will be elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1946.
1871 – The National Association of Professional Base Ball Players is founded, setting the stage for the future National League in 1876. The entry fee for a National Association franchise is set at $10.
On January 20, 1871, The first franchise in the yet-to-be formed National Association of Professional Baseball Players is born. The Boston Red Stockings, the league’s charter franchise, they are incorporated by Ivers Whitney Adams with $15,000 and will be managed by Harry Wright, who founded and managed the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first professional baseball team….
