With three consecutive home runs, Earl Averill drives in eight runs in a 13 – 7 Indians victory over the Senators in the doubleheader opener. He narrowly misses a fourth when the umpire rules a long drive foul. Averill then adds another homer in the second game to set an American League record with 11 RBIs in the twin bill.
1930 – Brooklyn’s collapse begins. The Cardinals tie for first place when Bill Hallahan outduels Dazzy Vance, 1 – 0, in 10 innings. Flint Rhem returns to the Cardinals with an improbable story that he was kidnapped by gamblers and forced to drink bootleg whiskey.
9/15/1930: In the bottom of the first with runners on 1b and 2b, Dodger Glenn Wright hit the ball to right-center. It looked like it might be caught so Babe Herman slowed up as he neared 2b. The ball bounced over the fence for a home run but Wright had his head down as he ran between 1b and 2b. Consequently, he passed Herman and was called out. He lost a homer but still knocked in 2 runs.
The Robins win their 11th straight, although Babe Herman once again stops to watch a home run disappear for a record second time in one season. This time, Glenn Wright lopes past the awestruck Herman to reduce a homer to a single.
