Although some teams in the AL implemented digits on their jerseys on a regular basis a few seasons ago, the Senior Circuit had refused to follow suit, probably as the result of the Cardinals being harassed by opposing players and fans when they wore numerals on their sleeves in 1923.

Pepper Martin and Eddie Delker both homered in the top of the eighth inning but lost them when the game was called and the score reverted to the seventh inning. Delker was 0 for his last 18 at the time of the homer and had never slugged a four-bagger in the majors at the time.
