6/26/1949: Dino Restelli of the Pirates lost a home run during Game Two of the June 26, 1949 Brooklyn at Pittsburgh doubleheader. The game was cancelled due to rain and the curfew after three innings. Restelli had hit a home run in the first inning off of Rex Barney. The game was delayed by rain in the second inning and then stopped with the Dodgers leading 5-4 after three innings. The Pennsylvania Sunday curfew law prohibited any inning from beginning after 6:45 pm (or any play after 7:00 pm).

On June 14, 1949, Eddie Waitkus of the Philadelphia Phillies is shot with a .22-caliber rifle by an obsessed 19-year-old fan named Ruth Ann Steinhagen. Waitkus suffers a collapsed right lung after being shot near his spine but will survive the bizarre attack on his life.

Three-Finger” Brown, Charlie Gehringer, and Kid Nichols inducted into the Hall of Fame

On June 13, 1949, a class of three are inducted into the Hall of Fame: Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown, Charlie Gehringer, and Kid Nichols. 79-year old Nichols, who won his first major league game in 1890, is on hand in Cooperstown for the ceremony.  

Frank Frisch‚ who began the season as coach of the Giants‚ replaces Charlie Grimm as manager of the last-place Cubs. Frisch was the first choice of Grimm‚ who goes into the front office as a vice president after tomorrow’s games. According to Grimm‚ “the Cubs have never had a fighting manager of the Frisch type for forty years. The last manager who’d compare with Frisch in my book is Frank Chance.”
