Dick Stuart’s 9th-inning, two-out, two-run bomb makes it close but the last-place Cardinals hold on, ending their three-game skid with a 7 – 6 squeaker over Pittsburgh. Stuart’s near-500-footer, however, provides fodder for rooters and writers alike. Les Biederman reports: “Fans left Forbes Field buzzing about the tape-measure home run Stuart hit over the scoreboard in the 9th. Jim Brosnan had two strikes and no balls on Stuart when he fed him a curve. Stuart flicked his wrists and the ball was still zooming as it rose well over 100 feet above the height of the wall and landed somewhere in the parking lot far into Schenley Park. ‘It was the longest I’ve ever seen hit at Forbes Field,’ coach Howie Pollet of the Cards offered and manager Solly Hemus and coach Harry Walker both agreed.”
At the age of 39, Early Wynn of the Chicago White Sox pitches a one-hit shutout, strikes out 14, and hits a double and home run for a 1 – 0 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Comiskey Park.
With shades of his 430-foot, May 6, 1955 birthday-crashing clout, Roberto Clemente once again triples over the head of his one-time mentor, Willie Mays, in the midst of a decisive, 7th-inning, three-run rally. Now, as then, Pittsburgh’s outburst fuels a 3 – 2 come-from-behind win over the Giants. Clemente initiates today’s uprising, reports UPI, “with a booming triple to centerfield.” Centerfield, in this case, would be that of Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field, whereas the earlier contest took place in New York’s Polo Grounds. Both arenas, however, feature similarly ample centerfield real estate.
At Crosley Field, Cincinnati Redlegs pitcher Willard Schmidt becomes the first major leaguer to be hit by a pitch twice in one inning. Schmidt is the 3rd-inning target of Bob Rush and Lew Burdette as Cincinnati beats the Milwaukee Braves, 11 – 10.
The Chicago White Sox, down 6 – 1 after two innings, score 11 runs with only one hit in the 7th inning of a 20 – 6 rout of the Kansas City Athletics. Johnny Callison has the hit – a single. In the inning, Chicago is the recipient of 10 walks – five with the bases loaded – three Kansas City errors and one hit batsman. Nellie Fox collects five RBI, including two in the inning, both times by walking. He also goes 4 for 5 in the game, while Luis Aparicio is 3 for 4, including a three-run home run, and scores four runs. Jim Landis causes two outs, both on grounders to the pitcher, in the strange inning.
At Griffith Stadium, Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees pitches a 14-inning, 1 – 0 shutout against the Washington Senators, giving up 8 hits while striking out 15. The Yankees win in the first half of the 14th inning on a Moose Skowron solo home run – the longest contest in major league history ending 1 – 0 on a home run.
At Wrigley Field, Stan Musial breaks up Glen Hobbie’s no-hitter with a two-out seventh-inning double. The 23 year-old right-hander settles for a one-hitter, going the distance in the Cubs’ 1-0 victory over the Cardinals.
Don Demeter of the Dodgers hits three home runs, including the game winner in the 11th inning, in a 9 – 7 victory against the Giants at the Los Angeles Coliseum. One of his homers is an inside-the-park home run, as he drives in six runs.
After his 8th-inning, game-tying solo shot off the Braves’ Bob Rush, Pittsburgh’s Roberto Clemente has compatriot Juan Pizarro right where he wants him – namely, ahead, 0-2, in the top of the 10th and thus poised to once again give up a game-winning home run to his fellow Puerto Rican. The two collaborated on a Clemente game-winner back on May 16, 1957and again last year on August 4th. But before the pair from Puerto Rico can try for a trilogy, the skies absolutely open, bringing this tense confrontation to an abrupt and unsatisfying conclusion, no resolution possible as the game will ultimately have to be replayed in its entirety.
