A home run derby featuring Bronx Bombers Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle vs. Giants sluggers Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda planned to take place before tonight’s exhibition game between the two teams is postponed due to the inclement conditions at Yankee Stadium. Mickey Mantle will be the only scheduled participant to homer in the actual contest, when his second inning round-tripper, a 450-foot blast off Bob Bolin that lands in the bleachers, accounts for New York’s only run.

Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris continue their assault on Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record

With back-to-back homers in the top of the first at Fenway Park, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris continue their assault on Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record. The game’s decisive hit, however, is a pinch-hit grand slam by Johnny Blanchard with two-out in the ninth-inning which propels the Bronx Bombers past the Red Sox, 11-8.

Ford Frick, an old friend of Babe Ruth’s, announces that should Ruth’s single-season home run record be beaten after 154 games are played, the record will carry a “distinctive mark”. When asked about the ruling, Roger Maris replies, “A season is a season.” Sportswriter Dick Young suggests an asterisk, which is later claimed to be Frick’s idea. No such designation is ever used in the record books, though, but the incident leads to a myth that an “official record book” lists Maris’s record with an asterisk. The myth is still popularly believed over 50 years later.
