The watering ploy earns Giants manager Alvin Dark the sobriquet “The Swamp Fox.”

At Fenway Park‚ the Red Sox sweep a day-night pair from Baltimore‚ winning, 3 – 0 and 7 – 3. Ike Delock shuts out the Orioles‚ giving the Red Sox their third shutout in a row. Gene Conley and Bill Monbouquette had previously whitewashed the Indians. Whitey Herzog’s home run in the 6th inning of game 2 ends the Sox string of 32 2/3 scoreless innings.

The White Sox score 7 in the 4th and beat Kansas City‚ 11 – 2. Joe Cunningham and Jim Landis each collect a single‚ double and triple‚ with Cunningham’s extra-base hits coming in the 4th.

At Buffalo, NY, Columbus (International League) beats Buffalo, 6 – 5, in 12 innings. Bob Veale of Columbus strikes out 22 Bison batters in nine innings.

In the first of three games with the Dodgers at Candlestick Park, Billy O’Dell coasts to an 11 – 2 win over Johnny Podres. The loss cuts the Dodger lead to four games.

 Yankees SS Tony Kubek, in his first at-bat after returning from military service, homers in a 14 – 1 Yankee win over the Twins.

The 29-81 Mets are mathematically eliminated from finishing in first place with their 7-5 loss to Los Angeles in Chavez Ravine. After the game, New York manager Casey Stengel calls a meeting and jokes with his players that they can loosen up and relax now that they are out of the pennant race, which they promptly do, winning just eleven more games during the last two months of the season.

For the fifth time, a team record, Willie Mays collects five hits in a game. In the 9-2 Giants victory over Philadelphia at Candlestick Park, the ‘Say Hey Kid’ hits two two-run homers in the first and second innings, and follows up with singles in the fourth, fifth, and eighth.

At Houston, reliever Johnny Klippstein belts a home run in the 13th inning to give the Reds a 1 – 0 win over the Colts. Klippstein relieved starter Bob Purkey in the 11th.
