Donald Dubois wins $27,000 when Fred Talbot, the Pilots’ starting pitcher who throws a three-hit shutout, hits a grand slam in the sixth inning of the team’s 8-0 victory over California at Sick’s Stadium. The Gladstone, Oregon native’s good fortune is the result of participating in the expansion team’s “Home Run for the Money” promotion.
1969 – Denis Menke belts a two-run blast in the ninth off Gaylord Perry for a 2-0 shocker over the Giants. Larry Dierker scatters four hits for his 18th win and fans nine to pass 200 strikeouts for the season.
1969 – Billy Williams has all four of Chicago’s hits, as the Cubs lose a 9 – 2 decision to Steve Blass and the Pirates. There’s nothing cheap about Billy’s hits – two doubles and two homers – as he sets a National League record for most hits in a game with no other hits, tying the major-league record of Kid Elberfeld (August 1, 1903). Blass helps his own cause with his only major league homer, a 3-run blast, off Ken Holtzman, and three singles. The win is Pittsburgh’s first at Wrigley Field since July 5, 1968, a string of 13 losses. They’ll win the next two to sweep the series and drop the Cubs lead to 2 1/2 games.

After thirty-one games, the third longest consecutive game hitting streak in National League history ends as Dodger Willie Davis is stopped by Dick Kelley and Gary Ross in a 3-0 loss to the Padres.
Collared his first four times up, Willie Davis hits a double in the 9th inning to stretch his hitting streak to 31 games. The double drives in the winning run as Los Angeles tops the Mets, 5 – 4. The Mets had tied the game in the 8th when Tommie Agee and Donn Clendenon each homered with a man on.
