In a 6 – 5 win over the Cubs, Montreal’s Ron LeFlore steals his 91st base of the season and Rodney Scott steals his 58th, breaking the major-league record for stolen bases by teammates in one season. Lou Brock and Bake McBride set the record with the 1974 Cardinals.
1980 – Jose Cruz slams a 12th-inning homer off Rick Sutcliffe at the Dome to cap a furious 6-5 victory over Los Angeles to tie the Dodgers for the N.L. West lead. Two Astros were thrown out at the plate earlier trying to score the winning run. Cruz had ignited two rallies that forced a 3-3 tie in regulation. Cesar Cedeno contributes four hits.
September 10, 1908 The Dodgers call up a young lefty from their Double-A San Antonio farm club. Fernando Valenzuela. He appears in 10 games and allows a total of none runs. He will go onto historic fame in 1981 leading the Dodgers to a World Series title.
Bill Gullickson whiffs 18 batters, the most strikeouts ever recorded by a rookie in a major league game. The Expos right-hander throws a complete-game four-hitter, beating Chicago at Olympic Stadium, 4-2.

1980 – Reds fireballer Mario Soto strikes out 15 Braves in a 7 – 1 Reds win in Atlanta.
Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspends Ferguson Jenkins as a result of the drug arrest last month. The suspension will last only two weeks before an independent arbiter surprisingly reinstates the Cubs right-hander.
