During a ceremony held in Cooperstown, NY, the United States Postal Service unveils a 20-cent stamp commemorating baseball great Jackie Robinson as part of its annual Black Heritage series. The Dodger infielder becomes the first individual baseball player depicted on a U.S postage stamp.
Oakland’s Rickey Henderson steals his 100th base of the season in a 6 – 5 win over Seattle, tying the American League record he set last season and leaving him with 56 games to break Lou Brock’s single-season record of 118. Henderson is the first player ever to steal 100 bases twice since the modern definition of a stolen base was put in place.

Phillies’ second baseman Manny Trillo boots Bill Buckner’s grounder to end his errorless streak at 479 chances, setting a major league record.
On July 30, 1982, the Atlanta Braves remove mascot “Chief Noc-a-homa” and his teepee from left field to make room for more seating at Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium. The Braves will lose 19 of their next 21 games before restoring the mascot and teepee.
After a 3 – 2 loss to the Brewers, Rangers manager Don Zimmer is fired and replaced by Darrell Johnson. During the 1976 season, Zimmer had replaced Johnson as manager of the Boston Red Sox.
Atlanta’s Phil Niekro posts his 250th career win, 8 – 6 over the Padres. The 43-year-old knuckleballer will finish the season 17-4, leading the major leagues in winning percentage.
1982 – Nolan Ryan notches the 200th win of his career, a five-hitter for a 3-2 victory over Cincinnati. Ryan strikes out 13. Ray Knight scores the winning run when Terry Puhl lines a drive off reliever Jim Kern that forces a wild throw from Ron Oester at second base. Knight hustles past third and beats the throw to the plate.
