The Chicago Cubs sign free agent pitcher Juan Guzman to a four-year contract. Guzman is coming off his best major league season, winning 16 games for the Texas Rangers.

1992 – Marge Schott is quoted in today’s New York Times as saying, that Adolph Hitler was initially good for Germany, that her references to “niggers” were in jest, and that she couldn’t understand why the word “Jap” was offensive. The major leagues will appoint a four-man committee to investigate Schott and will eventually suspend her for her insensitive and inappropriate remarks.
1992 – The Toronto Blue Jays sign free agent IF/OF Darnell Coles.
1992 – Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Pat Listach is named American League Rookie of the Year. Listach was recalled on April 7th to replace the injured Bill Spiers and hit .290. He also became the first Brewers player to steal 50 bases in a season.
Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Eric Karros is named National League Rookie of the Year. Karros hit .257 with 20 home runs, becoming the first Dodgers rookie to reach 20 homers since Frank Howard in 1960.
The Pittsburgh Pirates trade second baseman Jose Lind to the Kansas City Royals for pitchers Dennis Moeller and Joel Johnston.
1992 – Major League Baseball holds the expansion draft to stock the rosters of the National League’s two new teams, the Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies. A total of 72 players are chosen. Pitcher David Nied is the first pick of the Rockies, while outfielder Nigel Wilson is selected first by the Marlins. Florida take prospect Jose Martinez second, while Colorado picks veteran 3B Charlie Hayes next. The best picks for Florida are Trevor Hoffman (4th), eventually packaged for Gary Sheffield; Jeff Conine (11th), who will hit 81 home runs in four years; and Cris Carpenter (18th), later dealt to Texas for Robb Nen. For Colorado, they will find gold with Eric Young (6th), Joe Girardi (10th), Vinny Castilla (16) and Armando Reynoso (18th).
