2000 – Astros belt a club record seven home runs in a 14-4 bombfest at Wrigley Field. Tim Bogar, Richard Hidalgo and Lance Berkman each homer twice while Daryle Ward adds a solo shot. Bogar has a career day with four hits and five RBIs to drum the Cubs. Somehow, Jeff Bagwell misses the home run derby but he scores three times.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox, 4 – 0, behind Roger Clemens. A scary moment occurs in the 9th inning when Boston P Bryce Florie is hit in the face with a line drive off the bat of Ryan Thompson. The Red Sox hurler never loses consciousness and leaves the field with blood streaming down his face. Florie suffers a fractured cheekbone and a fracture of the orbital socket, the bone that surrounds the eye, and retinal damage. He will undergo surgery .
2000 – The Giants defrock the Padres, 13 – 1, scoring eight runs in the 6th inning.

Scott Sheldon joins Bert Campaneris (A’s, 1965) and Cesar Tovar (Twins, 1968) to become the third player in baseball history to play all nine positions in a single game. With the White Sox ahead 10-0, the Ranger infielder comes into the game defensively in the bottom of the fourth inning, replacing backstop Bill Haselman, and will proceed to play in every spot on the field, including a third of an inning on the mound, where he strikes out the only batter he faces.
In the Red Sox’s win over the Mariners, 5 – 1, Carl Everett of the Sox becomes only the sixth major-league switch-hitter to drive in 100 runs in both leagues when he knocks in his 100th ribbie of the year. Everett drove in 108 runs for the Houston Astros last season. The other five 100-100 switches are Ted Simmons, Ken Singleton, Eddie Murray, Bobby Bonilla and J.T. Snow. Pedro Martinez is the big star, striking out 11 in eight innings to go 7 – 0 over the M’s. Jamie Moyer loses his 6th in a row, though not through his fault as a routine fly ball by Jose Offerman to Mike Cameron becomes a three-run triple when the center fielder stumbles. Prior to the game, Boston retires Hall of Fame C Carlton Fisk’s uniform number 27.
The Rockies trim the Cubs, 6 – 2, as rookie OF Juan Pierre gets five hits.
The A’s defeat the Blue Jays, 10 – 0. Mike Stanley goes 5 for 5 for Oakland, including a double and home run, and drives home five runs.
