Playing in the 101st different park since 1876, the Cubs beat the Tigers in Comerica Park, 15 – 8. The Cubs win for the first time in Detroit in 56 years, dating back to Game 3 of the 1945 World Series when Claude Passeauthrew a 3 – 0 shutout in Briggs Stadium. Cubs DH Roosevelt Brown gets five hits in the game, including a double and home run.
Oakland ace Mark Mulder hurls a near-perfect game against the Diamondbacks, surrendering only a single to OF Danny Bautista in the A’s 3 – 0 win.
The Indians defeat the Cardinals, 14 – 2. 1B Jim Thome hits three home runs and drives home six runs for Cleveland.
2001 – Roy Oswalt finds a groove, striking out eight in a 5-1 victory over Arizona at Enron Field. Lance Berkman, Vinny Castilla and Craig Biggio support him with home runs. The rookie righthander runs his record to 7-1 and shrinks his ERA to 2.26.
Pirates’ skipper Lloyd McClendon is fined $1,000 for walking off the field with first base in the June 26 Brewers game. It’s the first time a manager has been fined for ‘stealing’ a base.
Atlanta’s Greg Maddux notches the 250th win of his career with a 9 – 5 decision over Philadelphia.
The Rangers score nine runs in the 4th inning and go on to defeat the Mariners, 14 – 2.
