In a 13 – 1 win by the Twins, Carlos Gomez hits for the cycle, the first Twins player to do so since Kirby Puckett in 1986. Gomez homers off Mark Buehrle in the 1st, triples in the 5th, doubles in the 6th and singles in the 9th, driving in runs on each of the first three hits.
Rookie Joey Votto becomes the 23rd member of the Cincinnati Reds to hit three home runs in a game. Votto, who starred for Canada in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, goes deep off Jon Lieber, Sean Marshall and Sean Gallagher in a 9 – 0 win over the Cubs. In the Reds’ 9-0 victory over the Cubs at Great American Ball Park, Jon Lieber joins Phil Norton (2000) in becoming only the second hurler in franchise history to allow four homers in one inning.
The Pirates top the Giants, 3 – 1, as Phil Dumatrait gets his first major league win. Barry Zito falls to 0-7, the first Giants hurler since Bill Clarkson in 1927 to reach such depths in just 7 starts.
Joe Mauer’s double with one out in the ninth inning breaks up Gavin Floyd’s bid for a no-hitter. The White Sox right-hander leaves the contest to a standing ovation from the U.S. Cellular Field crowd with Bobby Jenks getting the last two outs in Chicago’s 7-1 victory over the Twins.
On May 6, 2008, Gavin Floyd of the White Sox carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning before losing it on a double by Joe Mauer of the Twins. It’s the second time in the month that Floyd went at least 7 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.
In the 4,000th game played at Dodger Stadium, Joe Torre’s Dodgers beat the Mets, 5-1. The Los Angeles skipper also managed in the 1,000th game at the Astrodome (Mets – 1977) and Coors Field (Yankees – 2007), the 2,000th at Busch Stadium (Cardinals – 1991), the 3,000th at Angel Stadium (Yankees – 2003), and the 6,000th at Yankee Stadium (Yankees -2001).
With his three-run blast at Chase Field off Diamondbacks’ ace Brandon Webb, Carlos Delgado moves ahead of Juan Gonzalez as the home run leader for players born in Puerto Rico. The Mets first baseman’s 435th career home run places the Aguadilla native 36th on the all-time major league list.
2008 – Consecutive homers by Miguel Tejada, Lance Berkman and Carlos Lee highlight a 7-4 victory over Milwaukee. The feat happens in the sixth off Carlos Villarreal. Tejada’s blast comes after he promised a homer to a child with muscular dystrophy before the game. Hunter Pence accounts for the other three tallies with a pair of long balls.
Jose Reyes is thrown out at home plate in an unusual attempt to complete the cycle with an inside-the-park homer. The shortstop’s four hits pace the Mets’ 7-2 win over the Diamondbacks, the club’s 14th victory in the last 15 games played against Arizona at Chase Field.
