Troy Tulowitzki and the Rockies agree to a seven-year extension that guarantees the All-Star infielder $157.75 million until 2020. The 26 year-old Gold Glove shortstop’s contract is now the eighth richest in baseball history.
The Dodgers sign IF Juan Uribe to a three-year, $21 million contract. Uribe was a hero of the San Francisco Giants’ recent conquest of the World Championship, and hit the home run that clinched the win over the Phillies in the NLCS.
The Rangers sign free agent Yorvit Torrealba to a two-year deal worth $6.25 million. The acquisition of the veteran catcher, who is slated to be the team’s starting backstop, fills the potential void created by the possible retirement of Bengie Molina.
The Florida Marlins agree to terms with free agent pitcher Javier Vazquez on a one-year contract, pending a physical. It will be the seventh team for the veteran starter, and the fourth in the last four years. He was 10-10, 5.32, for the New York Yankees last season, and has won 10 or more games every year since 2000.
2010 – The Dodgers sign free agent pitcher Jon Garland to a one-year deal. Garland pitched briefly for the Dodgers in 2009 before going 14-12 for the Padres last season.
The commissioner’s office announces Vladimir Guerrero has won the Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Award. The Rangers’ DH, who hit .306, with 25 homers, along with 106 RBI for the American League Champions, beat out Boston’s David Ortiz and Minnesota’s Jim Thome for the honor.
2010 – The Diamondbacks acquire P Zach Duke, who was designated for assignment by the Pirates earlier this week, for a player to be named later.
The Giants re-sign 1B Aubrey Huff, one of the keys to their World Series conquest last month, to a two-year deal worth $22 million. Huff led the team with 26 homers and 86 RBI while batting .290 last season.
The Tigers sign C Victor Martinez to a four-year, $50 million contract, leaving the Red Sox scrambling to find a replacement backstop in a thin market.
Josh Hamilton joins Jeff Burroughs (1974), Juan Gonzalez (1996, 1998), Ivan Rodriguez (1999), and Alex Rodriguez (2003) as the fifth Ranger player to win the American League’s Most Valuable Player award. The Texas slugging outfielder, who received 22 of the 28 first-place votes cast by the writers, led the major leagues in batting with a .359 average, hitting 32 homers and driving in 100 runs despite missing 29 games in September after suffering two broken ribs.
